S.Korea,Russia on alert for radiation leaks
Countries neighboring Japan are on high alert for possible radiation poisoning coming from the troubled Japanese nuclear power plant.
South Korea set up a taskforce immediately after Friday's earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.
About 30 personnel are monitoring radiation levels around-the-clock at 70 locations in the country.
No changes in measurements have been detected so far.
The South Korean agency that oversees food and drug safety is checking all farm products from Japan for radioactive contamination.
Agricultural imports from Japan amount to only 110 tons a year, but the authorities have taken the step because of mounting concerns among citizens.
The authorities are also considering strengthening inspections of marine products from Japan.
Russia is also stepping up its monitoring of radiation levels in its Far East region.
A national observatory in Vladivostok has increased the number of its radiation measurements from once a day to once every hour.
The observatory says it found no change in the readings as of Tuesday morning.
